Trade Up Cont...

Trade Up Cont…

Hey! So remember my blog “Trade Up!” about how I traded from a paperclip to 2 Oilers tickets??
Well here’s a whole show on a man who travels the world simply trading whatever he can to get by, whether it’s camels or jewels or coffee beans. And he plans to actually come back with more than he left with!
Not something I personally recommend haha… but super cool to see it in action!

Subway, Eat Free!

Get it? Instead of eat fresh? ha, I'm so clever.

Anyhoo, I'm getting a kick (and a bit of a belly) from all of the promotions fast food joints seem to be having lately! The newest one I've found is that on Friday, April 23rd (the day after the free coffee deal at Subway ends) the sandwich shop will be giving away free breakfast and coffee from 7AM until 11AM!

And Subway is healthy, so you can't feel guilty about this one, right?? Enjoy!

French Creamers

Bahaha, soooo, I just came across the most hilarious job opportunity for French speakers who like the beach and travelling.
First of all, the position is described as "creamers"... couldn't come up with anything better?? All you would have to do is walk along the beach in Sables-d'Olonne (a small town in France) and apply free samples of sunscreen to anyone interested!
They are looking for an attractive male and an attractive female, pay is approximately $6700 for six weeks, and the requirements are to be available July and August and to speak French (though being fluent in English or German is a bonus).
The application process is submitting a one-minute video on YouTube explaining why you'd be a good candidate and sending it to lejobdelete.com.
This sounds hilarious. I am very intrigued by this opportunity. It's an excellent way to make dec money while travelling and having fun! However, I do not speak French and I feel like spending some quality with the homeland (Canada) this year.
So make sure to comment here if you apply, I'd love it if someone I knew made it!

Spoiled at the Spa

I am a strong believer in spoiling yourself every once in a while. It’s one of my rules to keep me such a happy person! :D (along with a bit of chocolate everyday too…)

But spoiling yourself can certainly come at a cost, especially if it’s any sort of spa treatment that you desire. And really, I know we all desire it.

So my little tip of the day is actually quite obvious, but people simply tend to forget about it. Instead of going to the major salon, go to their school!!

The students are already trained, and they really want to do their best so that they can make it to the big spas one day. Marvel is my favorite to go to. Half hour massage for $20 or full hour for $35? Heck Yes!!

Then there are the odd absolutely wonderful deals that come around from students who need hours but their school doesn’t own a salon. I rarely discover these, but I recently have found one so I’m going to share it with you.

For the months of May and June, students at Grant MacEwan are massaging for $10 an hour!! I have a feeling you’ll have to book these babies in advance. As of April 1st they are taking a appointments, so go ahead and induuuuulge, these opportunities are rare.

Birthday Bash on a Budget

Does your group of friends aaaalways do the same thing for everyone’s birthdays, so for yours you want to try something different? Or are you just in the mood for a memorable night with friends, but don’t want to pay for anything extravagant like a limo (which is also generic anyway)?

Well here are some unique birthday party ideas that I’ve either been to or heard of for young adults that are hilarious. If you’re with the right people you can have fun doing anything! So round up your friends and try out these for a fun night without anyone dishing out for something expensive:

1) Roller disco. Get the skates instead of the blades, they’re 10 X more challenging! This is best with a larger group of people, and also leaves opportunity for a dress up theme if you’re in the mood and have time. I was awful at it… but my high shorts and pigtails made me look cute trying ☺

2) Last year a group of us girlies got dressed up to the max, had a couple of cocktails, and went out for BINGO! Nobody won but we still had a blast, so I can’t imagine how exciting it would be if you cashed in too!

3) Did you know that Chuck E’ Cheeze is licensed?? Enough said.

4) Two of the best nights I’ve had this year have been at a place called the Ivory Club in Edmonton. It’s a piano bar. You can honestly request aaaaanything from Eminem to the Beatles to the Black Eyed Peas, and they will play and sing it flawlessly. There’s a flashing dancefloor that gets bumpin’, and everyone always has a smile on. If you go on Thursdays, there is no cover, $6 pizzas, drink specials, and piano-okee, which is an amazing twist on karaoke.

Where’s the most random place you’ve ever been for your birthday?? Mine was painting pottery at Hot Pot Studio in Red Deer. It was awesome… but can get a tad pricy.

Camping Continued...

Hey Friends!

So, I said before that once it got closer to May-long weekend (and camping season in general) I would post some of my favourite FREE camping spots. I should warn you though, the places I’m about to mention are the “set up tents in the wild with friends and bring your own toilet paper because there are no amenities around you” type of camping spots. Live free while you’re young, right??
Soo, my absolute favorite spot is at a place called South Fork Road. It’s quite close to Rocky Mountain House. There are tones of large spots (though you might want to come a night early if you want a good one for major weekends), it runs along a creek and there are quadding and forest trails all around. Police patrol it on weekends but for the 3 times I’ve been there they were really nice and pretty funny. So I've posted the directions to this mystery camping wonderland at the end of the post.

Another super popular spot is out by Dickson (a few km east of South Fork). But there are a lot of back roads and I find that people tend to get lost or get their vehicles stuck around there, so I prefer the above mentioned location.

Have fun camping, and don’t forget to bring plenty of socks! (they always all get wet somehow…)

Love,

Ami G

I’ll start off from Red Deer, since most people know how to get there.
Go west on Highway 11 until you hit Highway 22, and turn left on it (south). It should take 30-45 min to get to this turn from Red Deer.
Turn right (west) onto Range Road 380, then follow it until you get to the South Fork Road sign which directs you to turn left (south).
You will then come across a plethora of excellent camping locations for RVs or tents. Don’t be afraid to drive for a while, it’s a huuuuge area. Then put a landmark at your site so your friends can find you (like a homemade scarecrow with a purple bandana- everyone will notice it but no one will steal it... hopefully).

Lunch Date for Less

So, in case you can’t tell, I’ve been getting incredibly excited over this warm weather. I’m sprung for spring!! And this means it’s finally a time where I can do one of my favorite date ideas again, a picnic!
This can be adorable if you go shopping and prepare your meal together too- one of my favorite places to pick up picnic food is the Italian Market in Edmonton- so authentic! Or you can take turns cooking and surprise one another. This is usually much cheaper than going out for lunch at a restaurant too.
One perk to doing it in your backyard is that you’re close to home if you forget anything, and it’s ok to have wine ☺. Totally matches the Italian theme.
Orrr, if you decide to go to a park (so classic), make sure to bring a sleeping bag instead of a blanket. You never know if the ground will be wet so if you unzip the bag fully it will be waterproof on the bottom.
And wherever you are, make sure not to litter! Bring a plastic bag with you for garbage.

Love,

Ami G

With Freedom Comes Responsibility

Ha, the title makes me feel like a parent.

I feel like it’s time to quote another book. I know I usually blog about $ tips, but this time I just have an overall tip for our generation. And since it’s my blog, I can do what I want.
So this book is called “Grown Up Digital”, by Don Tapscott. I thoroughly enjoyed it because it’s all about us: Our generation! They talk us up… and critique us. There is one major critique that I strongly agree with- that we share too much online.
Now that I’m at the age that I’m thinking about my future, I’m a little bit horrified knowing that they have complete access to my social history. And I wasn’t even a bad kid!
We are so excited about social networking opportunities and sharing everything becomes so natural to us that we forget the long-term effects. Along with our freedom also comes responsibility.
It took me a little while to absorb this idea. What’s the big deal, everyone does it? But when you look at the increasing amount of people getting fired from facebook pictures (my friend was one of them!) or some of the obnoxious, border-line offensive things that some people tweet, it makes sense to be a little more conservative.
So next time you find that hilarious picture from that wild party that looks way worse than it really is… maybe think twice before you tag yourself in it?
